My Dental Implant Experience

It's just one good news after another! After celebrating our (me and my boyfriend) 3rd anniversary ros a couple of weeks ago, Manny Pacquiao sweeping his new victory in boxing against Ricky Hatton tumbuk last Sunday, and passing menari the National Swedish Test --- my dentist finally attached my new tooth yesterday!

If you have read my Tooth Horror story, you'll be able to understand why I am so happy right now. Since the day I have had an accident damaging my front teeth, my self-esteem has been in the lowest level of my life. I am really happy that somehow, fate have pushed me into the care of a very good dentist.

I already have done my first four visits with my dentist. The first one was the examination and the planning regarding the best option to fix my tooth condition. It has been extremely bad that my gum and the nerves of both my front teeth have suffered so much trauma and have been severely inflamed. During that moment, my dentist have performed a little dental operation to clean the nerves. She also has injected an anti inflammatory and antibiotics to minimize and hopefully stop the infection. The suggestions have been to perform a root canal on one of my front tooth (left one) and a dental implant on the other tooth (right one) which has been broken due to my fall.

The second visit hasn't brought me good news. My dentist has taken a couple of x-rays and has informed me that the inflammation is still there. She has again cleaned the nerves, injected antibiotics and covered the nerve holes to allow the inner wounds to heal.

The third visit has been a long one. I have gone through a root canal session without any anesthesia at all. I haven't felt any pain which is surprisingly good actually. Once again, my teeth nerves have been injected with antibiotics. The holes have been closed to keep the nerves clean.

Yesterday ... yes ... yesterday, has been almost a three-hour session as I've gone through the tooth implant phase. Unluckily, I've been injected with anesthesia (which I really hate as it makes me soooo dizzy gigil). After more than two hours of dental operation, finally --- I've had my new tooth sengihnampakgigi!

I have been asked to visit my dentist again next week to make sure that everything's good and great!

Now, I can smile again!

Cold Sores

What causes cold sores?

Cold sores (also known as fever blisters) are caused by the virus known as the herpes simple virus (HSV). HSV are categorized into two types; HSV I and HSV II. Both types may cause lip sore, mouth sore and genital herpes. However, cold sores are commonly caused by type HSV I.

As cold sores are triggered by a virus, it is contagious and can spread from one person to another.

The virus usually enters the body through a cut or a break in the skin inside the mouth or around the mouth area. The virus is transfered from an individual to another by close contact and kissing. It can also be trasmitted when a person touches a cold sore by sharing infected eating utensils or razors. After the trasmission, blisters will appear which will then break open after a matter of hours or days. Cold sores can be very painful which may last for some days to 2 weeks.

Individuals who are infected with cold sores may also pass the infection to his or her child.

What are the symptoms?

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate - or SLS is a common ingredient in toothpastes and mouthwashes as a foaming agent. It is associated with canker sores as it has a drying effect which causes the shedding of the outer layer (the protective layer) of the insides of the mouth. When the outer layers are being shed off, tissues underlying beneath become susceptible to canker sores. (read more about SLS here)

Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam filling is another type of mixture used to restore teeth. It is made of silver, tin, zinc, copper and mercury which comprises about 50% of the whole mixture. Amalgam filling is usually used in filling backs of the teeth and molars.

Advantages of amalgam fillings are:

  • They are strong and can withstand forces due to biting and chewing.
  • More affordable compared to other tooth-filling alternatives such as white composite fillings.
  • Lasts longer than other tooth-filling methods as its lifespan may last up to atleast seven years or more.
  • The entire procedure can be completed in one dental visit.

Disadvantages of amalgam fillings are:

  • It does not match the color of the teeth (they are silver in color) that is why it is only considered if the areas to be covered are located at the back of the teeth or on the molars.
  • It requires a large part of the teeth for it to be accommodated therefore some healthy parts of the teeth should be removed.
  • The part of the teeth where amalgam meets the tooth may discolor in the long run. This is due to the fact that amalgam fillings tarnish after some time.
  • There are people who are allergic to mercury and are not allowed to undergo this type of treatment.
  • The amount of mercury in amalgams is almost similar to what people get from the environment, a fact which is based on studies and researches. So, one should also take into consideration the possible effects of mercury in the body.

White Composite Fillings

White Composite Fillings

Introduced in the 1960s, a white composite filling is a mixture composed of glass (silicon dioxide to be particular). The two main purposes of white fillings are to restore decayed parts of the teeth and for cosmetic improvements such as changing the uncolored teeth or reshaping deformed teeth. The white fillings were first designed to sit on the front part of the teeth because they were not good enough to withstand the pressure induced to back teeth especially to the molars. It was later enhanced which can now be placed in the back teeth and molars unlike before.

Below are some advantages using white composite fillings:

  • It restores most of the tooth's primary strength as it adheres to the tooth completely.
  • It brings back the natural color and appearance of the tooth.
  • The tooth being treated with white fillings is not as sensitive to both hot and cold food and drinks compared to amalgam filling (amalgam is further discussed here).
  • The tooth filled with white resin will fully hardened and is immediately ready to be used after the treatment.
  • White composite fillings are mercury-free.
  • The procedure requires minimal removal of tooth structure as compared to amalgam fillings.

Disadvantages using white composite fillings:

  • Compared to amalgam filling, white composite fillings are more expensive (about 50 to 60% price difference). This is because the materials used in white fillings relatively cost much and the amount of time is comparably longer than applying amalgams.
  • Although white fillings are strong, its lifespan is still not as long as amalgams have although the difference is not that huge at all.
  • Can be critically weekend and damaged by too much alcohol intake as alcohol deteriorates the composite fillings prematurely.
  • After some time, the composite fillings will acquire stains and will therefore discolor. Retreatment is recommended whenever this occurs.
