Canker Sores

Canker sore treatments

Most canker sores heal naturally after a few days (usually from 7 to 14 days). However, you can try one of the following remedies to minimize the pain such as:

  • Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are often taken for pain relief.
  • Take vitamins C with B-complex as these vitamins will hasten the healing process.
  • Mix 5 ml of Milk of Magnesia and 5 ml of Benadryl Allergy liquid in a glass. Gargle the mixture for about one minute and spit it out. The Milk of Magnesia-Benadryl mixture minimizes the pain especially if the procedure is applied every 4 to 6 hours.
  • Use carbamide peroxide (also known as urea peroxide, urear hydrogen peroxide or percarbamide). It relieves minor inflammation and pain caused by canker sores. Apply the preparation to the sore according to package instructions. It may sting a little during first applications but will soon numb the affected area relieving you of pain. It also speeds up recovery period.
  • Zinc lozenges also aids in the treatment process of canker sores by dissolving 50 mg lozenge on the sore. This can be done 3 times per day.
  • Place wet black tea bags on sores. Black teas are known to contain tannin which is capable in relieving pain.
  • Mix 2 fl oz (about 60 ml) of hydrogen peroxide and 1 fl oz (about 30 ml) of water. Gargle for 1 minute 4 times a day.
  • Mix 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of salt and 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 4 fl oz (about 120ml water). Gargle for a minute atleast 4 times a day.
  • Use a toothpaste and mouthwas which do not contain SLS.
