• What Are Mouth Sores?

Most common types of mouth sores:

• Canker sores - are also known as aphathous ulcers and are characterized with small white or gray based cuts having red borders inside the mouth. They often occur on the tongue, on the inside cheeks or the lips. Canker sores are very common but are not contagious. Common causes of this type of mouth sore are fatigue, allergies and stress which may last from 1 to 2 weeks.

• Cold sores - are also called fever blister or herpes simplex which occur outside or around the mouth. They may also occur on the gums of the mouth. This is due to the fact that these sores are often triggered by herpes virus type 1. Cold sores are very contagious which may last from 1 to 2 weeks. Common causes of cold sores are stress, trauma, ultraviolet light and weak immune system.
